"Some estimates say that two million
Americans are victims of violent crimes every year, a tragic,
staggering number, perhaps an all-time record rate of violent crime.
But there are almost 300 million Americans, which means that the odds
of being a victim of violent crime is considerably less than one in a
hundred on any given year. Thus there is a paradox, and we must grasp
both ends of the situation: We may well be in the most violent time in
history, but violence is still remarkably rare. This is because most
citizens are kind, decent people who are not capable of hurting each
other, except by accident or under extreme provocation. They are
sheep.....Then there are wolves out there that will feed on the flock
without mercy. There are evil individuals in this world and they are
capable of evil deeds. The moment you forget that or pretend it is not
so, you become a sheep. There is NO safety in DENIAL."- Lt Col. Dave
Grossman.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSHA) mandates that, in addition to compliance with hazard-specific standards, all employers have a general duty to provide their employees with a workplace free from recognized hazards likely to cause or serious physical harm....In January 1989, OSHA published voluntary, generic safety and health program management guidelines for all employers to use as a foundation for their safety and health programs, including a workplace prevention program.
Safety is 24/7. DO YOUR EMPLOYEES FEEL SAFE ALL THE TIME? A risk-free environment will never exist. Therefore, employees and employers must be self-motivated to develop a "personal-safety" procedure to reduce risks. In a world full of uncertainty, we can allow ourselves to be victims or we can take control of our lives. By taking control, this is a WIN-WIN for everyone!
We need to cure bad behaviors that are predictors of risk for violence ( Indifference, Procrastination, Lack of Knowledge, Denial, Lack of Focus, Complacency)
There are also no guarantees for TOTALLY safe travel. However, you can reduce the risks of becoming a victim across town or across the country. We all need to learn tips and techniques to prepare and respond to the unexpected.
It's a new world....Are YOU Prepared??
As a result of the 5,500 reported incidents of workplace that occur every day, at least three people are killed. Recently, the US Department of Labor reported that 2003 saw the first spike in workplace in three years (Viollis, ibid). A March, 2004 FBI Report estimated that nearly 80% of workplace homicides are committed by criminals with no other connection to the workplace, who have committed robberies or other violent crimes. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, (BJS) US Department of Justice, in 2002 nearly 750,000 crimes of were committed each year against people at work or on duty and another 170,000 against people traveling to and from work.
The sobering reality is that workplace homicides are only the tip of the iceberg- a much larger risk lies in the non-fatal workplace incidents. It has been estimated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that between 1.5 and two million non-fatal incidents occur each year, and many suspect that this is under - reported by approximately 50 percent.
