What a frightening world we live in.  Yet, there are a lot of times, we shouldn't be surprised by things that happen.  We make ourselves vulnerable by our actions (cell phones, ears clogged with iPod speakers so we can't hear as we jog) and behaviors (not helping others when they call for help)  But as a concerned parent with a child leaving home for college this fall, how do you let your child go and not worry?   "Okay, our mothers used to worry too - my mother was afraid I'd gain that extra 20 pounds in college and over sleep during the all important 7am chem. lab class when I am a professed night owl and hate mornings.  She did not have to worry about my life!!" noted Kimberly Elliott - mother, Godmother of a 17 year old heading to college, and new corporate CEO of Executive Defense Technology  in St Louis.  EDT wanted to find a way to help ease the minds of "helicopter" parents before this fall.  Therefore, they have partnered with the South County branch of the YMCA, the St Louis County Chief of Police and the County Police Department to put together an all encompassing program scheduled for August 3rd, 2007 from 5 - 8 pm.  It will be a "hands on" program. Most teenagers think they are invincible and "nothing will happen to me".  Unfortunately, violence can happen to any one, any where.  Violence does not discriminate.  Criminals are predators who plan their attacks yet most of us are predictable and have no plan for our protection. As a combined group, they have developed a  "plan".  It is called "COLLEGE KNOWLEDGE: Everything you need to know before leaving home" and is open for girls ages 17-21.  A band has been scheduled with an outdoor venue - as a mock set up of a college party.  But when attending the personal awareness and safety portion of the program the girls will be asked - did you notice who was standing around you? Some will be marked with small dots to show how easily it is to be touched in a crowd and not notice. Did you set your drink down unattended? Do the girls realize how easily these drinks can be spiked with drugs?  During the evening, these and other issues will be addressed. Other honorary speakers will include: 1. MADD 2. Dietician -Who will have a  Healthy Portions presentation with a hands on approach to what a "portion" really looks like3. Mrs. MO - will be speaking on eating disorders and health self-esteem; she is a retired Rams Football cheerleader and a recovering    anorexic4. St Louis Co Highway Unit - Will be presenting their Arrive Alive Program and will have goggles to simulate what it's like to be drunk - a very well received presentation at local driver's education courses5. RAD Trainer - Police Sergeant and trainer will be speaking about Rape Prevention and a retired Miss Missouri will be sharing her experiences as a victim of rape during her freshman year of college6. Sergeant from the (CFFU) IT unit for St Louis Co Police  will be talking about safety on the computer and about identity theft8. Personal Safety Training / awareness and defense training - Law enforcement trainers9. US Bank - will set up for student checking accounts and $300 limited credit cards They are also looking for support from local businesses who promote "back to school" products to the college bound student such as  Best Buy, Target, Sports Authority and Bed, Bath and Beyond. Since criminals are prepared for us, why not help our students become proactive? Let's help them be prepared for not only college but life in general. Kimberly Elliott's hope is that this program will not only become an annual event but will be something that catches on Nationally.  Kimberly notes, "If we can help prepare people one by one, eventually the criminals won't have a chance to take advantage of us - we will be ready for them and we will be able to reclaim our homes, work places and communities. When this behavior is no longer tolerated, life will be safer and more enjoyable for us all."
